Axis deer are native to India, where it is known as the chital deer, which means spotted in Hindu. Axis were first introduced into Texas in the 1930s. Thanks to hunters and private landowners, there are now more axis deer in Texas than their native land. Conservation thru commerce works and the axis deer are great examples of what can be accomplished with proper management!
